That first group of women understood that they had been given authority to teach, inspire, and organize the sisters as disciples to assist in the Lord’s work of salvation. In their first meetings the sisters were taught the guiding purposes of Relief Society: to increase faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and seek out and help those in need.

My Dear Sisters,

As we enter the month of December, I am reminded of all the wonderful things that have happened over the last year. I am also reminded of the sad times that have come because several of our dear sisters have left this life and moved on to the next, leaving us to feel their loss. It is hard to be happy, sometimes, when loss is so near.

Christmas is a special time of the year, not only for the celebrations, parties, decorations, and gift giving and receiving, but also for the deep thoughts we can have of the birth of the Savior, and of the impact this has on our lives. Sometimes we are so caught up in the celebrations that we fail to take time to sit and ponder the great gift that was given that night so long ago.

I have loved serving with you for this last year and look forward to 2010 with great anticipation. It is my hope that each of us will take some time, if only a few minutes each day, to ponder and contemplate on the true meaning of Christmas and what it means to each of us. Through this meditation we can feel the Spirit in our lives and it will help us to know those that are in need of our service at this time of the year. Through the quiet whispering of the Spirit, we can better fill our callings as Relief Society sisters and as women in the church, in the nation, and in the world.

I love each of you and hope your holidays are beyond wonderful.

Love,
Pat Romney

To our Dear Sisters,

October was a wonderful month full of special experiences. We were able to listen to the General Authorities as they spoke words of love and encouragement. All of the sessions were wonderful and who will ever forget the words of Jeffrey R. Holland, as he shared his testimony with us. We are blessed to be able to hear the words as they are spoken. It wasn't too many years past that we were not able to hear conference, except for maybe an hour or two. Now we have many options available to us to participate in this glorious experience.

Then there was the retreat. For all of you who were there, we loved sharing with you. The class on journal writing was great. Are you still writing? The exercise of letting go of things we don't need in our lives and keeping the things that are good for us was, hopefully, one that touched everyone. The campfire, the delicious food, the s'mores (did Sister Romney ever figure out how to roast a marshmallow without getting it all over her hands), the karaoke, the games, and just being together was a special time to remember. Of course, having Elder Osguthorpe speak to us before breakfast was the best. How blessed we were to share in this experience. For those of you who were not able to join us, please know we missed you and hope that you can be with us next year.

Now, we will move through the month of November, remembering the myriads of blessings that are ours, and learning to love each other more than ever before. Reach out to those around you. Let them be a part of your life and you be part of theirs. We love you and pray every blessing you stand in need of, will be given you. If we can serve you, let us know.

Love,

Dear Sisters,
I absolutely love belonging to a church that is so progressive. It seems that every turn or corner the church is moving forward and making changes that reflect the world-wide organization that it has become. Some people are not comfortable with change and sometimes change is hard, but I love knowing that Heavenly Father is aware of us and our challenges and is willing to make good changes for our benefit. Although I have finally learned the term Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment, it is quite a mouthful. My daughter pointed out to me that it doesn't translate very well into other languages and is hard for those who don't speak English. I, of course, had never thought of that. As Sister Beck announced last Saturday, now we will simply say Relief Society. How easy that is to remember! And we must remember the Relief Society; for we are one of the largest women's organizations in the world. We must remember to serve, to love, and to take care of one another. Relief Society can help us accomplish such a great task.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the Relief Society retreat. You will see on this site, a list of things to bring, and the schedule as we have planned it. As many of you are aware, there is an important leadership meeting on Saturday at the Stake Center at noon. We have made changes in the schedule in order to have those of you who want to attend the meeting still enjoy most of the retreat. We will be finished with breakfast at 9:30 or 10:00 and those who wish to leave can do so. Those who are not going to the meeting can stay with us a little longer and work on the service project of making blankets to be donated to a place that can use them. We will be completely finished by 11:00 or so and everyone will be on their way home by noon. We are also asking those who can, to carpool, as we must pay $4 for each Indiana car and $5 for each Kentucky one. Please plan to join with us and spend some time with the sisters in the stake.

I send my love to you.

One of the best motivators is to acknowledge what someone is doing right and the effort they are making. In Sheri Dew's Go Forward with Faith, Adney Y. Komatsu, who served as a mission president in Asia, recounted how he would worry before President Hinckley came for a visit, afraid he would be chastised for all he was not managing to get right. Instead, Komatsu said, "...never once in my three years did he criticize me, despite all my weaknesses...And that spurred me on." Komatsu was always greeted warmly by the prophet and praised for his efforts. "When he left I felt I should give 105 percent, not just 100 percent." Discouragement is one of Satan's most effective tools. Be sure to encourage others in their callings. Focus on what teachers are doing well and the efforts they are making, and they will be encouraged to keep striving to magnify their callings.

What a wonderful and uplifting broadcast that we were privileged to enjoy Saturday night. I was honored to be one of the fourteen sisters at the Louisville Fourth Ward that enjoyed the inspiring words from Salt Lake. It was nice to get to know Sister Barbara Thompson on a more personal level and see how she has developed a testimony, and how it has grown over the years. She is obedient and ever faithful. A worthy person to aspire to emulate in these latter days.
Her talk made those three words, "Mind the Gap!", very meaningful to us in these latter days. She also touched on three aspects of how to close any gaps that may befall us.
*Believe and know that we are daughters of God (Learn to recognize God's love and know that he loves "Us".)
*Upon the completion of Young Women's, a healthy and accepting relationship with Relief Society is a must (It's not just what you can get out of Relief Society, but what you can do to give! You need the church and the church needs you!)
*Believing in Jesus Christ and then being valiant.Let our voices be heard and declare the gospel. (We know that we must do more than just believe!)

In closing, I love the quote by Sister Camilla Kimball, "Never suppress a generous thought!", as read by Sister Beck. Let us be generous! May we be a light to a sister, an inspiration, a calm in the storm to someone, a listening ear to one in need, or a casserole to a worn out, tired, sick family. To be able to do the Lord's work and not be overcome by events, we need to remember to eliminate unnecessary things that get in the way! Have a wonderful month sisters!
Till we meet again.........Love,

Dear Sisters,

It is September! The summer is just leaving and fall is arriving. How I love the fall! I can just tell when it's here because the sunshine changes. The weather begins to cool off a little and walks are much more enjoyable.

It was delightful to see and visit with so many of you last Thursday at the Auxiliary Training Meeting. I hope you enjoyed being there as much as we enjoyed having you with us. I thought I might just go over a few things we talked about:

1. Success is in the "Cans" and not in the "Can-nots"
2. In order to better reach the sisters in your wards and branches a challenge was given to have supervisors make phone calls in the middle of the month to help remind the visiting teachers that the end of the month is coming. So often, the end comes and no one is ready. (Wow, does that sound a little like a Bible story?)
3. The Visiting Teaching Leader to use small handouts or reminders to help the visiting teachers keep visiting teaching on their minds.
4. Teachers can bring their own "spice" and "tools" to their lessons, by using their own experiences, testimonies, and by concentrating on the parts of the lesson the Spirit leads them to use.
5. There are always new and exciting ideas that can be used to make our Home, Family and Personal Enrichment meetings a richer experience. From home-made laundry detergent to pie in a jar. By looking for ideas that are new, we can make our meetings a place that everyone wants to be.
6. Every president needs a secretary. Secretaries can bring peace and a calmness to the Relief Society President by taking some of the burden and helping her with it. The secretary can make sure the agenda is complete before Relief Society starts. She can meet the new sisters in the unit and make sure she has their name, address, and phone number to pass on to the President. A secretary can keep minutes of meetings and make sure that everyone knows what their assignments are. A secretary is a must in a presidency.

As I mentioned in the meeting, I know that we look at numbers, but truly, sisters, we are looking at souls. A question was posed to me not long ago. "How do we save souls?" I said "One at a time." I truly believe that. Each sister is precious and needs our love and compassion. She also needs to be included in all the activities and events we hold in our units. I know we are up to the challenge and with every one doing their part, we can and will success.

Keep us the good work. I love you all and hope September brings you health, happiness, and joy.

President

Welcome to August!

I am amazed that the summer is flying by so quickly. The back to school sales are appearing in the newspaper and families are getting ready for the first day of school. I am constantly reminded that we have much to do and the time is flying by.
This month brings a Relief Society event. We are holding our Relief Society Auxilliary Meeting on August 27th at 7:00. We want to invite all Relief Society Presidencies, including Secretaries to our meeting. We think it will be worth the time you spend with us and hope you will put it on your calendars.
We are also looking forward to the Relief Society Retreat to be held on the 23rd and 24th of October. It will be in O'Bannon Woods near Corydon Indiana and we will be including all the information pertaining to it in future editions of the blog.
I have been visiting your units and love being with you. There is always such a feeling of love and a sweet spirit in your Relief Society meetings. You have always been so welcoming to me and to anyone I bring with me. What a joy it is to be with you and to share in your love. Each of you leads in a different way, but there is always the same Spirit. Please know that I love you and learn from you in so many ways. You strengthen my determination to lead and help lift me up in just the right way.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Dear Education Counselors,

The very first verse of the Doctrine and Covenants uses the expression "listen together". I like that idea and think that learning together has a lot to do with listening together, especially listening to the still small voice of the Spirit, whether we are a teacher in a class or a student. In Drawing Closer to God, President Eyring quoted directions he has tested from President Marion G. Romney about how to get the help of the Holy Ghost: "If you want to obtain and keep the guidance of the Spirit, you can do so by following this simple four-point program. One--Pray. Pray diligently. Pray with each other...Learn to talk to the Lord; call upon his name in great faith and confidence. Second-study and learn the gospel. Third--live righteously. Repent of your sins by confessing them and forsaking them. Then conform to the teachings of the gospel. Fourth--give service in the Church...If you will do these things, you will get the guidance of the Holy Spirit and you will go through this world successfully, regardless of what the people of the world say or do." I know when we have the Spirit with us we can be inspired to know how to help those we

Hello, Home Family and Personal Enrichment Counselors!

I hope that this post finds you feeling well and enjoying the summer!
I am so excited about our Auxiliary Training Meeting that will be held this month.
(See the countdown at the bottom of the page)
We are told that the purpose of enrichment meeting is to give sisters opportunities to learn and apply principles and skills that will help them increase faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and seek out and help those in need. This is exactly what we have in store for you! ;-) We will be sharing a multitude of ideas about compassionate service, education and literacy, finances, health, homemaking, marriage and family, sharing the gospel, temple and family history to name a few. By now, I am sure that your interest is in high gear! Come and partake of the Spirit of Relief Society as we esteem one another and share the gospel.

Dear Secretaries,
I have been so blessed by this new calling. I have never been a secretary so I'm learning and growing. Do I sometimes feel overwhelmed?. You bet! Some of you that have recently been called as secretaries have shared that thought. But I know that Heavenly Father loves us and wants us to succeed. I have found prayer to be extremely helpful and other sisters who have held that calling can give a lot of insight. Together we will serve our sisters in the Relief Society by writing down those important items which need immediate attention and be the little reminder. GET IT DONE! and do all we can to help the presidencies accomplish the work the Lord wants us to do at this time.

Love you you,
Bannah Hanover,
Secretary

Welcome to our Relief Society Site for July!

We have had a busy summer and we are so excited for the month of July. It is the month that really gets summer going. We celebrate the birth of our country and also the entry of the pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley. As you think about the things that are such a big part of our history, remember that we, too, are pioneers as we search out the lost sister or bring someone new to the gospel. Anything that you do that hasn't been done before makes you a pioneer in your own right.

We are still busy planning for the Leadership Training Meeting that is scheduled for August 27, at 7:00. It will be held in the Stake Center and we are excited for all of the presidencies to attend.

We are also looking forward to the Relief Society Retreat to be held on October 23 and 24 at O'Bannon State Park near Corydon, Indiana. There will be more information coming to you through this site as we get closer to the date.

Have a great month.

Hello, Education Counselors!

In Alma we are taught that “by small and simple things, great things are brought to pass.” Sometimes a very small effort can make a big difference.

One small thing that I find helpful is the way we ask a question in response to something we have a class member read during a lesson. Often this is how it works: The teacher asks someone to read a passage. The person reads it and then the teacher asks them a question about it. Sometimes people have a hard time focusing on both reading aloud and reading for meaning. Or while one person is reading, class members have zoned out and aren’t prepared to answer the question either.

Instead: Before asking someone to read a passage, ask the class to think about a particular question as the person reads the passage aloud. (You can say something like this: “As Brother Jamison reads this scripture, think about why the Lord would give Nephi this counsel.”). This way the entire class is focused in on a specific question and is better prepared to answer. Also the reader doesn’t feel put on the spot and have to re-read silently what they just read aloud.

Also the June Ensign has an article on pages 24-25 called “Leading Class Discussion” that gives these two helpful suggestions:
Ask open-ended questions and don’t look for one specific answer.
Wait for student reponses. At least 20 seconds. You can even preface a question by saying you’ll give them a minute or two to think about it.

I know simple things we do in class can help everyone participate more and be better prepared to feel the Spirit so that the lessons of the gospel sink deep in their hearts and help them get through the challenges they face.

Maria Standiford, Ed. Counselor

Hello Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment Counselors!

My message this month is to think of the temple--The House of God. How is it decorated? How is it landscaped? How do people speak there? What helps you be able to feel love, peace, safety, and the Holy Ghost there? (Keep in mind that certain things about the temple are not realistic in homes. You will cook, do dishes, talk on the telephone, do homework, pay bills, have children run around, etc. Some purposes of the home are different than those of the temple. However, both places should be places where learning takes place and people feel peace, love, safety and the Spirit.) Playing soft, beautiful and inviting music in your home (like the music provided on this site), or listening to the radio on a soft sounding station also promotes a receptive place for the Spirit to dwell.

Love,
Starr Logsdon, HFPE Counselor

Dear Secretaries,

Who can help the Relief Society Presidency stay on track and meet the goals? The Relief Society Secretary. If you don't have one ask the Lord for his guidance in seeking a sister who needs a calling and can help your presidency. The secretary is the thread that can help sew all the pieces together.

By taking notes at your presidency meetings you can help the sisters remember what was discussed at the previous meeting. Make copies for each member for the next meeting. You will help all to be more focused on the goals set. Then as you return each sister can report on their particular assignment. Remind your R.S. President that you can help set up the quarterly visiting teaching interviews as you are gathered together. Wow! Watch more sisters little by little become more focused on the Savior and return to the Kingdom as we improve in helping one another.

Bannah Hanover, Secretary
